One battle that seems to rage on for most of us is that of eating a healthy diet. Whether it’s a plan we’ve put together for ourselves or we’re following a structured diet from a physician or commercial venture, snacking is usually inconvenient and often, unfulfilling. I tend to be a “grazer” myself which means I’ll eat a little bit 4 or 5 times throughout the day rather than sitting down to the 3 squares we all grew up with. There are even some schools of thought that this grazing is better for you but then in eating well as in other area of life, there are always positives to go with the negatives!
Because I happen to be a grazer, many of my “meals” are just glorified snacks! Most of them are low calorie or low fat/reduced fat as well as having some nutritional value. In this week’s Glam and Healthy section, I’m going to share with you 50 of my favorite Healthy Snacks. Well, most are healthy but you’ll see that I’ve thrown in a few of my not as healthy favorites as well.
In the effort to eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy lifestyle, I say “Play To Your Strengths” or simply put, choose things you like and enjoy to fill those “snack crazy moments”. It will be easier to stick with your commitment to be healthy and still fulfill our “A girl’s gotta have a little fun” quota!!!
P.S. If you drink a glass of water (load it with freshly squeezed lemon juice to jumpstart your metabolism) prior to the snack, you’ll reap double benefit….hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (especially this time of year) and, you’ll feel full and satisfied faster. Lots of times when we think we’re hungry, a glass of water (flavor it if you like, I do) will go a long way toward taking care of that snack fix we need!

Summer is coming…....are you ready? Many of us may be looking in the
mirror wondering what we can do to prepare for summer. March and April
are the perfect months to change our routines or even schedule procedures
that make us look and feel “summer ready”.
Wearing a swimsuit, shorts or even a cool dress on a hot summer day might
not be a first choice if there are unsightly spider veins in your legs. Simple
spider veins may appear on the legs as red, blue or purple “tree branch” like
patterns but don’t despair, help is available!
Sclerotherapy is the routine treatment for spider veins; however
treatment with a cosmetic laser is also an option. All Sclerotherapy
treatments performed at Advanced Aesthetics are performed by a Board
Certified physician.
Pain, aching, cramping, heaviness and/or swelling in your legs, may be an
indication of varicose veins. Varicose veins routinely appear as cords under
the skin and may appear twisted and bulging, and are often found on the
backs of the calf muscle or on the inside of the leg.
Varicose veins are a medical condition; therefore treatment is routinely
covered by most health insurance plans. Varicose veins should always be
treated by a Vascular Surgeon. Advanced Aesthetics Vascular Surgeons,
Dr. Jack Shellito and Dr. Jason Slaikeu utilize the Endovenous Laser
Treatment (EVLT.) It’s a simple in-office procedure that provides immediate
relief of discomfort with little to no downtime or discomfort to the patient.
For those with an adventurous spirit or who may want something a
“little more”, this might be the perfect time to contemplate body contouring
procedures such as breast augmentation, breast reduction or breast lift,
liposuction or a tummy tuck. Dr. Kenton Schoonover and Dr. Richard
DeSplinter of Advanced Aesthetics in Wichita offer consultation visits on
Monday and Wednesday and perform surgery on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
Both physicians are Board Certified with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
When considering any kind of treatment or surgery, make sure you do your homework
and select a surgeon who is Board Certified in his or her field of expertise. If Advanced
Aesthetics in Wichita, KS. isn’t convenient for you due to location, please take the time
to find a qualified expert in your area.
Okay, summer is almost here ladies…. time to break out the sunscreen, shorts, swimsuits
and sundresses. There’s lots of fun to be had with those little people we love so much!
I’m going to take this issue of Glam and Healthy and share something that’s new to me and not so “glammy”! I’m not a marathoner or even a runner but I do spend a fair amount of time on a treadmill or walking/jogging outside, weather permitting.
Just before a trip to Vegas this fall, I began experiencing a great deal of pain in the ball of my foot. I’d never heard of metatarsalgia but as turns out it’s quite common and I was about to get a very personal and painful lesson. For those who might not know, metatarsalgia affects the area just beneath the toes, or the ball of the foot. Seems the skin (at least mine) isn’t very thick in this area of the foot.
When the ball of your foot is inflamed and begins throbbing on a consistent basis and you compensate by walking on the side of your foot, metatarsalgia is something you want to investigate. Common causes are improper fitting footwear;women’s dress shoes or other narrow toed shoes that force this area to be contained in a less than adequate amount of space. Another shoe culprit would be an athletic shoe designed for low impact or no impact activity being used for a high impact activity like jogging.
After struggling to walk without limping I finally consulted my family physician. He first asked about my footwear and then explained the problem and some possible remedies. First, I bought a proper fitting and well cushioned pair of shoes for exercising. Then, froze a bottle of water and rolled the ball of my foot across it for 10 to 15 min. at a time, several times a day. This along with some ibuprofen seems to have taken care of most of the problem. Another option may be to purchase and insert gel pads or cushions into your favorite shoes. Most Drug Stores or Pharmacies will have what you need but if you prefer online shopping, http://www.footsmart.com has a great selection.
What about the improper fitting dress shoes, you ask? Don’t kid yourself, a girl can only go so far and depending on the shoe, this might be one time when the phrase, “it hurts to be beautiful” is apt!
