NO REALLY, IT’S EASY AS PIE

I have a love/hate relationship with learning new skills and hope that I’m not the only Grammy to feel like this! It’s not that I think I’m too old to learn just about anything I want because really, anyone breathing is young enough to learn something new. I seem to “hold” my breath a lot but I’m pretty sure that’s different from not breathing!! It’s not that I don’t WANT to learn, my challenge comes in the form of finding, or rather making, the “TIME” to learn something new.

Raising a family and all that that entails plus working in the world of Healthcare, I learned a great deal of what I’ll lump together as just plain stuff! Some of it worthwhile, some not and that’s probably universally true of people everywhere, not just Grammy’s. Yet nothing prepared me for the phenomenon that is “Social Networking”.  What I didn’t learn is “Googling” (not “oogling”, that I can do), “Texting”, “Skyping”, “IM-ing”,” Tweeting”, “ Binging”, “Blogging”, “Linking”, “Facebooking” and finally, a mere half million photo options and opportunities available inside all the above! Believe me when I tell you that while I am a Glammy Grammy and do my best to live with GG style each and every day, bringing “her” into the form of SOCIAL NETWORKING AND MEDIA was not and is not something that comes naturally to me….you know, like breathing!

Why am I telling you this? Well, let’s just liken it to first NBC and now CBS (read Katie Couric) telling us that getting a Colonoscopy is no big deal (which by the way is true) and could quite literally save our lives, I’m telling you that learning to connect via web based Social Networking is……no big deal! Not sure about the save your life part but it would not surprise me! Is it easy you ask? My grandsons, Jack age 6, Alexander age 3 and Lunden, almost 2 yrs old are pros at skyping. It’s fun and a great way to stay in touch with family members who aren’t geographically close to them. Lunden LOVES, LOVES, LOVES Grammy’s iphone….almost as much as Grammy does! Computers are integrated into their educations as vocabulary was into ours when we were their ages. “WWW” is here to stay and web based social activity has and will always be a part of their lives. Bottom line ladies, if they can do it, we can do it!!

There are books and tutorials on every thing in the world and yes, I mean everything! Barnes and Noble, Borders or Amazon (web based shopping…..WOOHOO) are all goldmines of information. There are even sites that will “tutor” or “walk” you through the web based activities listed above if you want to go that route. Personally, I like a good book with great pictures….you know, step one looks like this, step two like this….etc. One of my favorites so far is “facebook me!” by Dave Awl. It’s like a great picture cookbook, only for facebook! There are several great blogging guides too but so far, nothing I like quite as well as “facebook me!”.

Recently, I read that our demographic (we know who we are) is the fastest growing demographic on facebook. That tells me there are many of us and that we have lots to say! If you haven’t already made yourself a part of this rapidly growing presence, begin by joining me “The Glammy Grammy” on facebook as a fan and/or friend and we’ll figure it out as we go. There’s lot’s to learn and little to lose when done correctly!

PS, As Grammy to five and soon to be six little treasures, I try always to include everyone. However, our lovely granddaughters Eva and Lucy are not yet a year old so while they don’t do much on their own as far as web based social activity……..they’re little girls so you can bet they will be tearing it up ASAP!!
